Ingredients

  • Main Ingredients:
  • 1 cup basmati rice
  • cups water or vegetable/chicken broth
  • 1 tablespoon ghee or oil
  • 1 teaspoon ground turmeric
  • 1 small onion finely chopped (optional)
  • 2 garlic cloves minced (optional)
  • Salt to taste
  • Whole Spices optional but recommended:
  • 1 teaspoon cumin seeds
  • 1 bay leaf
  • 1 small cinnamon stick
  • 2–3 whole cloves
  • Optional Additions:
  • ½ cup green peas diced carrots, or bell peppers
  • Fresh cilantro chopped, for garnish
  • Juice of ½ lemon

Instructions

  • Rinse & Soak Rice:
  • Rinse basmati rice under cold water until the water runs clear. Soak for 20–30 minutes, then drain.
  • Sauté Aromatics:
  • Heat ghee or oil in a heavy-bottomed pot. Add cumin seeds, bay leaf, cinnamon, and cloves. Let them sizzle for a few seconds.
  • Add onion and garlic (if using) and sauté until golden.
  • Add Turmeric & Rice:
  • Stir in turmeric powder, then add drained rice. Gently mix to coat the grains with spices.
  • Cook Rice:
  • Pour in water or broth. Add salt. Bring to a boil, then reduce heat to low, cover, and simmer until rice is tender and liquid is absorbed (12–15 minutes).
  • Rest & Fluff:
  • Turn off heat and let rice sit, covered, for 5 minutes. Fluff with a fork.
  • Garnish & Serve:
  • Add fresh cilantro and lemon juice before serving.

Notes

  • Always rinse and soak rice to avoid sticky grains.
  • Broth instead of water makes the rice more flavorful.
  • Too much turmeric can make the rice bitter—stick to the recommended amount.
  • For a richer version, add a splash of coconut milk.
  • Works great in a rice cooker or Instant Pot (adjust water ratio per appliance).
