  • 4 cups apples, chopped Granny Smith or Honeycrisp recommended.
  • 2 tablespoons lemon juice Prevents browning.
  • 1 teaspoon cinnamon Enhances flavor.
  • 1/2 teaspoon nutmeg Optional spice enhancement.
  • 1/4 cup sweetener (erythritol or stevia) Use your preferred sugar substitute.

For the topping

  • 1 cup rolled oats Make sure they’re unsweetened.
  • 1/2 cup chopped nuts (walnuts or pecans) For added crunch.
  • 1/4 cup butter or coconut oil, melted To bind the topping.
  • 1 teaspoon cinnamon For flavor in the topping.

Instructions
 

Preparation

  • Preheat oven to 350°F (175°C).
  • Peel and chop the apples into bite-sized pieces. In a bowl, toss them with sweetener, lemon juice, cinnamon, and nutmeg.

Topping

  • In another bowl, combine rolled oats, chopped nuts, melted butter (or coconut oil), and additional cinnamon. Mix until well combined.

Baking

  • Spread the apple mixture in a greased baking dish and top with the oat mixture.
  • Bake for about 30-35 minutes until the apples are tender and the topping is golden brown.

Serving

  • Let cool slightly before serving. For an extra treat, add a dollop of sugar free whipped cream or a scoop of sugar free vanilla ice cream.

Notes

Tart apples balance sweetness; feel free to experiment with spices and toppings. Can be made ahead; just add the topping before baking.
